Kaori Nakamura, a top dancer for Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB), lived that dream, dancing for years on center stage. Nakamura is also teaching in the Pacific Northwest Ballet School these days. After the war, as people were released from the camps, they restarted their lives. 移民コミュニティー形成の中で欠かすことのできない情報共有の場。現在もさまざまなメディア媒体が情報発信の場となり、コミュニティーを支え続けている。シアトルの日系社会が形成された20世紀初期、日本語新聞は日系移民唯一の情報機関として大きな存在感を誇った。日本郵船会社による新航路が開かれ、領事館もタコマから移転するなど、大きな成長を遂げた1900年前後のシアトル日系社会。コミュニティーの隆盛に合わせ、1890年代後半から次々と邦字新聞、雑誌が創刊されている。その中で最も大きな規模を誇ったのが『北米時事』紙だ。ピュージェット湾地域のみならず、ヤキマ、スポケーンなどノースウエストの日系コミュニティーに支局を置き、各地の活動を伝え続けた。有馬純達著『シアトル日刊邦字紙の100年』によると、北米時事は「志の高い新聞」、「ゴシップ本位でない硬派の新聞」との評価を得ていたという。スタッフの中には著名人の名前もあり、第二次世界大戦前に外交評論家として活躍した清沢冽は、タコマ支部でジャーナリストとしての経験を積んでいる。 1902年９月１日創刊。米国で３紙目となる邦字日刊紙で、発行人は隈本清、ほか出資者があり、会社は現在のシアトル日本町内にあった。創刊時は６ページ、1905年に８ページに増刷。翌年新年号では32ページ、５千部を発行するまでに成長した。1913年に入ると、同紙発行の中心となる有…
